Flight Attendant Mental Health & Addiction Treatment

Recovery Ways, located in Salt Lake City, Utah, is proud to offer our specialized Life in Flight program for flight attendant addiction treatment and mental health care. This program works collaboratively with FADAP and other aviation union groups, and was designed with the unique experiences of flight attendants in mind. Our team is here to support you whether you need a higher level of care such as detox or residential treatment, or a more flexible option such as our partial hospitalization program (PHP) or intensive outpatient program (IOP).

Is It Time to Seek Help?

Flight attendants often struggle with substance use and mental health conditions, but don’t know how to seek proper help. Long hours coupled with a high pressure environment, difficult passengers, and isolation from friends and family can be highly challenging to cope with after a while. Though not much research has been done on this subject, we do know that a large percentage of flight attendants who seek treatment for addiction also struggle with symptoms of mental health conditions (International Journal of Mental Health and Addiction). Many individuals may know they need professional support, but are afraid of consequences such as job loss, reputation damage, and financial challenges.

Some signs a flight attendant may benefit from a treatment program include:

  • Inability to keep up with professional and/or personal responsibilities
  • Using substances while working
  • Experiencing frequent feelings of sadness, hopelessness, or irritability
  • Unexplained mood swings
  • Using substances to cope with stress
  • Experiencing withdrawal symptoms when substance use stops
  • Isolating from friends and family
  • Lack of interest in work and hobbies
  • Suicidal thoughts and/or self-harm

A Program Curated for Flight Attendants

Designed specifically for flight attendants, the Life in Flight program at Recovery Ways offers personalized care for addiction and mental health challenges. Our flexible levels of care—including residential, partial hospitalization (PHP), and intensive outpatient (IOP) programs—allow each participant to find the right balance of structure and independence. For those who wish to keep flying while in treatment, our outpatient options make it possible to continue working while staying connected to a strong support system and clinical care team.
