Utah Treatment Center
Recovery Ways, a Utah Treatment Center, offers a continuum of care for all of our patients. We make sure that our patients get the help and care that they need from start to finish and even after. We give our patients the tools they need to continue their life of sobriety long after they have finished treatment with us. In order to do that we need to make sure that patients start and go through the right treatment programs for them. To do this we have a professional assessment of all patients and continue to allow the patients to be a part of their treatment program. We offer Inpatient Medically Supervised Detox, Inpatient Residential Treatment, Partial Day Treatment/Partial Hospitalization (PHP), Intensive Outpatient Treatment (IOP), and Sober Living. Provision of PHP and IOP programming are done as a primary or step down care upon assessment based on medical necessity. Follow through aftercare and follow up for one year post discharge. This continuum of care helps our patients learn how to live a sober lifestyle, start their sober lifestyle, and maintain their sober lifestyle. We focus on the return to function, family, and the community. We even offer an alumni program for our patients that have gone through treatment and their families who want to build lifelong fellowship and pride among Recovery Ways alumni year-round through meaningful activities, programs, and service opportunities.
The Unique Holistic Treatments at our Utah Treatment Center
The holistic approach means treating the whole person and not just working on the physical symptoms, but also the mental, spirit, and social, with the understanding that they are all interconnected in the healing process. When this is applied to addiction recovery it allows the patient to heal and improve all of these aspects of their life for the ability to maintain and enjoy their sobriety. There are always different reasons that people start to use drugs. For some it may be because they have a co-occurring mental disorder, others may become addicted to pain medication for a very real physical pain that they have, or they may simply be trying to improve their emotional or spiritual state. When taking the holistic approach to the treatment of addiction, the patient uncovers the reasoning for their addiction and are given the knowledge and resources on how to handle it and improve their life without the false aid of their vice. With the understanding that when there is a problem in one of these areas, there are direct issues in the others. For example, someone with physical pain and an addiction to opiates may then start to suffer from depression, stop taking care of themselves, and the process continues and worsens. Holistic treatment offers many different ways to improve all of these.
Holistic recovery offers therapists for individual and group therapy, medical teams to ensure patients remain physically healthy during their stay, healthy meals that provide energy and nutrition needed in recovery, physical activity to help them stay healthy while also using the benefits of the endorphins released during exercise, meditation and yoga to help with relaxing and calming oneself, and other therapies. By utilizing this approach patients are able to find and maintain a balance in their life which helps with sobriety. Someone with a co-occurring disorder that is never addressed or understood, it would be more difficult for them to stay sober after treatment. While some people may consider these unique, it is only because not everyone has them available to offer. Those who have used these treatments have seen the benefits and enjoyed the outcomes. Offering new ways of looking at life, experiencing life, coping with stressors, understanding emotions, understanding any co-occurring disorders.
Sensory Integration Therapy
Here at our Utah treatment center, we offer some unique therapies for our patients that help them through their stay here and when they begin their new sober lifestyles. Our sensory integration therapy offers a completely patient centered therapy that helps patients identify their feelings of depression, anxiety, anger, pain, and agitation and gives them a new way of coping with those feelings. It gives them a way to self regulate their emotions, feelings of pain, and their environment through music, sounds, imagery, and sensations.
Recovery Ways’ Sensory Rooms provide an environment that nurtures the body and invites the person to engage in activities that help them to feel good and to focus on strengths, interests, and personal self-care. Recovery Ways has created a dedicated room that aids in the removal of stresses of the outside world. It is an artificially created space that brings together multi-sensory equipment in one place to stimulate or calm the senses. Our multi-sensory room offers a nurturing, patient-centered, sensory supportive, interdisciplinary treatment space. This room provides a specifically designed space that provides clients with additional options for recognizing and reducing their level of self-perceived distress and anxiety.
The Sensory Rooms
These specially designed sensory rooms, or Snoezelen rooms, offer a multiple of sensory stimulation for our patients to make them more comfortable as well as more aware of their body and their feelings. When patients feel stressed or upset about something they are used to using their substance to cope. These rooms teach them different ways to handle those feelings. Surrounded by comfortable seating, cushions, a swing, 65 different colored LED lights, calming imagery such as beaches and mountains, and music or sounds. All of these things help to make that patient feel more calm and able to explore their feelings of depression, anxiety, pain, and agitation. They have sensory stimulating things such as weighted blankets, pillows, and other comforting tools.
Recovery Ways Sensory Room is used to facilitate empowerment, relaxation, self-awareness, sensory awareness, and self-regulation. Our room offers a variety of sensory modalities that the patients can explore and use to assist with self-regulating when they are feeling overstimulated, overwhelmed, overloaded, or triggered. A patient can also use the sensory room when feeling depressed, sad, tired, or exhausted to assist with changing alertness levels to be able to attend to daily activities and learn to self-regulate. This self-regulation allows patients to feel more control over their addiction and their everyday life. While patients are at our Utah treatment center they will have scheduled times for the sensory room therapy but they will also have access to it if they need it at an unscheduled time.
Our occupational therapy gives patients the chance to learn life skills they may have missed out on or given up on because of their addiction and other coping mechanisms. They get to experience new things in community outings and learn how to handle their addiction and any triggers they may face in the future. Our Occupational Therapy Program is designed to enhance and enrich Recovery Way’s interdisciplinary and therapeutic approach by working with residential and IOP patients for transition and reintegration into the community upon completion of rehabilitation:
Sensory Challenges and Solutions
Occupational Engagement and Barriers
Roles and Identities
Vocational Challenges and Solutions
Habits, Patterns, and Routines
Volition / Intrinsic vs. Extrinsic Motivation
Remediation and/or Adaptation of tasks and skills
By focusing on the skills, daily routines, and roles that the individual values and helping integrate them into the individual’s self-efficacy and self-image, the therapist can help enhance the lifestyle and support the sobriety of the newly recovering substance abuser. The focus of therapy is to attain a level of functional performance in the client’s meaningful life roles that had deteriorated due to substance abuse.
Our Utah treatment center offers many different types of therapies for our patients to help them understand their addiction and any co-occurring disorders, learn coping skills for sober living, and to help build support groups. One of our important therapies is sometimes considered as experimental, meaning it is engaging in hands-on that help recovering addicts process and deal with past trauma, offer a stronger sense of self, a new sober hobby, and even build more trust in themselves as well as others. Some of the more demanding activities can simulate real world stress for these recovering addicts that they will have to overcome without any drugs. Recreational therapy can also help with some co-occurring disorders such as PTSD, OCD, eating disorders, anxiety, and depression. Treating these disorders and the addiction together make relapse less likely. These activities also help recovering addicts become more personally responsible, develop their communication skills, learn problem solving skills, and teamwork and support. These are all skills they can use in their new sober lifestyles as well as the activities they participate in.
Therapeutic Recreation is a process where a nationally certified and state licensed Recreation Therapist uses recreation activities of all kinds to bring about a positive change socially, emotionally, intellectually, physically, and/or spiritually. Our Utah treatment centers capitalize on our natural setting with a robust outdoor experiential therapy program under the direction of our nationally certified and state licensed Recreational Therapists. These therapists use all kinds of activities to allow patients to discover and recreate themselves while practicing skills in a safe supportive environment. The Recreation Therapy process prepares patients in their recovery to initiate their leisure time with constructive activities, which may increase their self-efficacy, competence, and autonomy. It is a purposeful intervention designed to improve patient’s overall quality of life.
Recreation Therapy Focuses On:
Leisure education. Building healthy relationships. Creating trust in oneself and others. Building competence, reliability and independence. Enjoying sober fun and experiencing life. Increasing one’s self-worth and motivation. Each of our Utah treatment centers believes in a holistic approach to addiction and a part of that is taking care of the body which physical activities such as those learned through this therapy help maintain a healthy body while offering a sense of fun and adventure for the patient. When the patient makes it through sober they may make new sober friends through one of these activities that they enjoyed while in treatment or simply just enjoy it so much they continue to participate as an alternative to using drugs. The exercise can help reduce depression, anxiety, stress, and cravings and will help keep patients busy and schedules full.
Recreational therapy helps patients develop self determination, an investment of attention, enjoyment, functional improvement, perception of manageable challenges, and intrinsic motivation. All of these things will help recovering addicts through everyday life stress, coping with triggers and co-occurring disorders, and maintaining their healthy sober lifestyle.
Having Fun Sober
Once patients complete their treatment programs they will have experienced many new activities and maybe even some old activities but they were sober. These experiences show them that they can have fun without using alcohol or drugs. It also teaches them that they can relieve stress and help manage their depression, anxiety, and other co-occurring disorders without drugs. They can meet new sober friends and continue these activities with other alumni from Recovery Ways. One of the biggest reasons for relapse after treatment is recovering addicts feel bored. Each Utah treatment center can help them find groups, facilities, and hobbies to help them keep their time busy once they are through with treatment.
It is possible to have fun while sober and through the treatment programs offered at our Utah treatment centers, we will help you find some ways to do that. However, recreational therapy allows you the chance to try new things and accomplish things you’ve never done before, just as you can accomplish your goals for sobriety. You can use the activities done here as a way to enhance your health, functional abilities, independence, teamwork, and quality of life. These activities can help give you an outlet for stress or to remain active and not bored. Many recovering addicts do not remember what they enjoy outside of their substance abuse. Recreational therapy can help remind them or give them new interests. With the help from our staff and our alumni you will be able to overcome all obstacles.
Activities May Include (weather permitting):
Our Utah treatment centers know that we have patients of all ages and all capabilities. While patients cannot skip out on the recreational therapy activity of the day they will be given some options for which they would like to do that day. We do encourage our patients to try new things and go out of their comfort zone a little bit so that they can accomplish new things, experience new adventures, and maybe even find a new sober hobby that they will love and will help make their transition into the real world sober even easier. Being located in Utah we are surrounded by a multitude of landscapes and recreational facilities. We are surrounded by mountains with some of the best powder (snow) around, deserts, lakes, rivers, canyons, and the recreation facilities. Some of the activities we participate in throughout treatment include:
Snowshoeing, Skiing, Volleyball, Tai Chi, Hiking, Rock Climbing, Rappelling, Kayaking, Alpine Slides, Zip-lining, Rope Course, Canoeing, River Rafting, Wakeboarding, Golf, Broomball, Bowling, Billiards, Aquarium, Local Tours, Biking, Fly Fishing, Indoor Tennis, Miniature Golf, Go-karts, Laser Tag, Campfires, Disc Golf, Karaoke, Archery, Speed Skating, Library, Bobsledding, Snow Tubing, Cooking, Bocce, Croquet, Sled Hockey, Flag Football, Horse Riding, and many more!
Benefits of Recreation Therapy
There are many benefits to Recreational Therapy. Some happen during treatment and all can occur after treatment programs are finished if they keep up some of the activities they experienced here.
The major benefit is that it reduces boredom. It also improves self-esteem and social functioning. It helps patients develop exercise and relaxation skills and problem solving skills. It decreases loneliness and increases feelings of control, ability to focus, ability to cope with stress, ability to choose non chemical alternatives for achieving goals, and their ability to have fun sober.
How Utah Treatment Centers Help
Addiction: The National Institute on Drug Abuse says it’s a chronic disease. It knows no boundaries of socioeconomic class, gender, race, intelligence, or age. Addiction affects people all across the globe, from movie stars and political leaders to grandparents. Addition is a relapsing brain disease that has certain characteristics such as a compulsion to continue using the substance no matter how negative the consequences. Addiction changes your loved one’s brain and body.
Drug And Alcohol Addiction
Chemical Dependence describes a pattern of substance (drugs or alcohol) use and the inability to stop using leading to significant problems in daily living. Chemical Dependency can be a psychological as well as a physical need to use alcohol or other drugs that doesn’t go away even when using them causes negative consequences. Individuals chemically dependent on a substance, like alcohol or drugs, lose their power of choice pertaining to the substance as well as their ability to make rational choices.
Chemical Dependency is a disease that does not see age, sex, race, religion, or economic status. It is a chronic and progressive disease, and if untreated, it can be fatal. The substances most frequently abused include the following:
LSD & other Hallucinogens
MDMA & Ecstasy
At each of our Utah treatment centers, we treat addiction and chemical dependency in an atmosphere of support, understanding, respect and confidentiality. Our patients are people with treatable diseases. We understand that patients suffering from the disease of addiction need specialized attention. The emphasis is on the individual and an opportunity to meet each patient’s needs. With this in mind, the experienced staff at our Utah treatment centers treat the medical, physical, and emotional needs that patients experience during the treatment process. The treatment process at Recovery Ways focuses on the whole person, not just the physical addiction. Our rehabilitative treatment model is firmly rooted in the 12 Steps and uses a variety of evidence-based treatment modalities, including:
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy
Eye Movement Desensitization & Reprocessing
Stress Management Strategies
Yoga & Meditation Fitness
Dialectical Behavioral Therapy
A vital educational component at our Utah treatment centers is to teach people with chemical dependency the concept of understanding addiction as a disease. As a result of this understanding that dependency is a disease similar to other biological diseases (heart disease, cancer, high blood pressure), patients recognize that their dependency has specific signs and symptoms. We believe that this understanding will help our patients follow recommendations and reduce shame and guilt commonly associated with chemical dependence. Our Utah treatment centers, accredited by the Joint Commission, offer treatment excellence to those suffering from substance use and mental health disorders.
Mental Health/Co-Occurring Disorders
Treatment of drug and alcohol addiction is seldom as simple as merely addressing the particular chemicals an addict is taking into his body. More often than not, addicts suffer from other disorders in conjunction with their chemical dependency which is clinically referred to as co-occurring disorders. The National Survey of Substance Abuse Treatment Services says about 45% of U.S. citizens seeking treatment have been diagnosed with co-occurring disorders. According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration’s National Survey on Drug Use and Health in 2014 approximately 7.9 million adults in America suffered from co-occurring disorders. Our Utah treatment center’s holistic approach allows for decreased readmission rates, increased tenure in sobriety, increased patient satisfaction, and decreased absenteeism.
Co-occurring disorders means that a person is affected in two ways: they are chemically dependent and experiencing an emotional or psychiatric illness. There are many disorders that can co-occur with substance abuse. They can include, but are not limited to: antisocial personality disorder, borderline personality disorder, obsessive-compulsive personality disorder, narcissistic personality disorder, and paranoid personality disorder. Mood disorders can also co-occur with substance abuse. Some mood disorders that are common with chemical dependency are: depression, trauma, bipolar disorder, and anxiety.
To fully recover, someone with co-occurring disorders, also known as a dual diagnosis, must be treated for both conditions. After the patient has gone through titration and stabilization, the next step is rehabilitation for the substance problem and treatment for the mental disorder. This integrated treatment allows Recovery Ways to address the mental and substance abuse at the same time which helps lower costs and increases long-term sobriety.
Treating Mood and Personality Disorders at Utah Treatment Centers
Regardless of whether a co-occurring disorder exists simultaneously with substance abuse, or doesn’t begin to show itself until withdrawal, dealing with the disorder is just as important as dealing with the substance abuse. If co-occurring disorders are not properly treated, addicts are much more likely to relapse at a later date. Our Utah treatment centers understand the direct link between chemical dependency and these disorders, and strives to treat both effectively.
As part of the healing process at Recovery Ways, every client participates in our clinically proven treatment program that addresses both the substance abuse and co-occurring disorder issues. Our residential program is highly structured, offering a minimum of 8 hours of daily programming. A licensed clinical staff diagnoses co-occurring disorders and assists each client in developing an individualized treatment plan tailored to suit his or her specific situation. As a client progresses through their substance abuse treatment, they are also treated for their co-occurring disorder in a way that aids their overall recovery.
Our Utah treatment centers also work with the family members of our clients to help them understand the underlying co-occurring disorder. By giving them the knowledge and tools they need to deal with the disorder, they are much better equipped to help the client in his or her long-term recovery. The Utah treatment centers integrated approach is a proven model that has seen great success.
A dual diagnosis presents specific treatment challenges depending on what combination of disorders are being dealt with. Each of our Utah treatment centers specialize in identifying the co-occurrence of substance abuse, mood disorders, and personality disorders and then effectively treating them appropriately. Our programs are designed to break the addiction cycle, stabilize moods, and teach the addict how to cope with mood and personality disorders effectively.
At our Utah treatment centers, we help relieve the pain and confusion of having a dual diagnosis or co-occurring disorder by treating both conditions simultaneously. We take a realistic approach to helping clients recover by:
-Treating both the substance abuse and the emotional or psychiatric illness.
-Providing individual attention to the core issues that are below the surface.
-Developing a personal recovery program that will support the individual needs of each client.
How the Outpatient and Aftercare Programs Work
Each of our Utah treatment centers offer a continuum of care for all of our patients. This continuum of care helps our patients learn how to start their sober lifestyle and maintain their sober lifestyle. We focus on the return to function, family, and the community. We even offer an alumni program for our patients that have gone through treatment and their families who want to build lifelong fellowship and pride among Recovery Ways alumni year-round through meaningful activities, programs, and service opportunities.
Intensive Outpatient Treatment
Recovery Way’s Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) provides treatment which will empower patients to function more independently and responsibly, while preparing them for the community with the skills and abilities to lead successful lives. It can be designed to work in conjunction with your daily career to prevent a period of absence from your occupation and can allow you to live at home instead of at one of our locations. We provide comprehensive outpatient services for those who are assessed as being able to participate successfully in regularly scheduled outpatient visits and who are not at medical risk. The program has a weekly commitment to attend three Recovery Ways evening or morning group therapy sessions. We also have a family program and you will be introduced to local 12-step groups. IOP patients have learned the fundamentals of addiction management and will learn how to strengthen those skills and build the start for their new sober lives. Through this program the staff at our Utah treatment centers will help patients start putting the fundamentals of their sober life in place and help them with any problems that may arise during this time. Patients will continue therapy and have other services offered to them including life skills to help with the continued healing of the mind, body, and soul.
Our Utah Treatment Center Aftercare Programs are for patients who have successfully completed a recent addiction treatment program. Completing this addiction treatment is an accomplishment worth celebrating and the Aftercare and Alumni Programs help patients develop and maintain a sober lifestyle. These programs are based on the needs and recommendations for each individual to help them get back to where they were before their addiction or even to a better place. A key piece of the programs are the development of a community-based support. A strong support system is necessary to maintain freedom from addiction.
During your treatment program we work with you to plan your new lifestyle and activities. This includes self-monitoring, attendance at activities like 12 step meetings, scheduled reporting with your therapist and ongoing support as needed. As a recovering addict you will go back to friends, family, work, and hobbies but we will help you recognize your triggers and chose the right people to keep in your renewed sober life. We will work with you to help you maintain your sobriety, we understand that stress and other triggers do happen. Life does change and our Utah treatment center gives you the tools to deal with the changes in an appropriate manner.
